Proper work practices for portable power tools

On Behalf of | Sep 11, 2017 | Uncategorized

For many industrial workers, using portable power tools is a way of life. This can include everything from drills to circular saws to grinders (and that is just the start).

While using portable power tools on the job may be unavoidable, and is a great way to work in an efficient manner, your safety should always come first. The last thing you want is to be injured by a defective tool or improper use.

Here are some tips to follow at all times:

  • Never use a portable power tool unless you know exactly how it works
  • Inspect the tool before using it, and if you find a defect set it to the side for the meantime
  • Take full advantage of safety guards, when available
  • Use the right tool for the right task
  • Let others know when you are using a portable power tool, as this gives them the opportunity to keep their distance
  • Don’t make any changes to the tool that could cause it to be unsafe to use
  • Keep tools in a secure location when you are not using them

When you do these things, you’re less likely to be part of an accident.

Unfortunately, even if you do your part to remain safe, this doesn’t mean that your coworkers and employers will take the same approach.

There are times when employers insist that workers use a particular portable power tool, even if they know it’s defective.

There are also times when a coworker will make a mistake with a tool, thus harming another person.

If you suffer an injury due to the negligence of your employer or a coworker, you may be able to make a third party claim. This is often the best way to receive compensation for your injury, which can include lost wages and medical bills.
