Early intervention is critical in cases of spinal cord injuries

In many areas of medicine, technological enhancements are making a major difference for patients in Kentucky and elsewhere. Fortunately, such advancements can be life changing. This is especially true for such conditions as spinal cord injuries.

Spinal cord injury is similar to other types of medical prognoses in that early intervention is critical. One major determining factor in a patient's outcome is how efficiently he or she receives early intervention after sustaining his or her injury. The sooner a spinal cord injury patient starts to strengthen his or her muscles below his or her injury site, the less damage he or she may sustain. This ultimately leads to a better outcome.

Another important factor to consider is how severe the injury is. For instance, a complete injury of the spinal cord is one where all communication that occurs between the spinal cord and the brain has been destroyed. In other words, the patient loses most or all function underneath the site of injury. By comparison, an incomplete injury takes place when signals still exist between the brain and the spinal cord, thus leading to some loss of function underneath the injury site.

In some cases, spinal cord injuries in Kentucky result from the carelessness of another person, such as a motorist who has decided to text and drive. In this situation, the individual who suffered the spinal cord injuries has the right to file a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver, seeking damages. A successfully litigated lawsuit might result in a financial damage award that may help with addressing medical costs and other losses associated with the spinal cord injury.
